Modern quarter red morocco; title and following two leaves repaired at margins on verso, plate at p. 137 lacking all areas beyond folds, 120 mm vertical tear to T3, gutter of final leaf repaired.

FIRST EDITION of Kircher\’s popular and richly illustrated work on Chinese culture and language, drawn largely from the accounts of fellow Jesuits Adam Schall, Martino Marinti, Johann Grueber, and Matteo Ricci. This work contains the first Chinese vocabulary and Sanskrit grammar printed in the West and remained the primary source for the study of those languages until the nineteenth century. The Chinese vocabulary is drawn from a translation of the 8th-century Nestorian stele; the Sanskrit grammar on the work of Jesuit Heinrich Roth.
