白鲸和美国的帝国主义视野
提 要: 大量文本证据表明,《白鲸》广泛触及了美国帝国主义视野的诸多重要维度,具有明显的意识形态
倾向。借助后殖民主义理论对欧美“权力中心”的批判, 可以说明《白鲸》是如何试图建构这一中心呀镇内始新电罗, 从而
与美利坚民族的帝国主义想像相辅相成的。将《白鲸》置于胶的重流服石李现帝国主义语境下解读,可以清晰地再现这部美
国文学的典律作品同帝国主义意识形态之间的密切关系。

with several major dimensions of the American imperialistic vision . A close study based on the theories of

在为数众多的关于麦尔维尔的评论中,人们从多种 角度表达了对其代表作《白鲸》的看法,《白鲸》被看作
是神话、诗歌、政治寓言、心理学文献等等。但在这些评论中,很少有人关注《白鲸》在美国帝国主义进程中
的位置。这一点让人颇为不解, 因为正如爱德华·赛义 所说:“帝国主义和小说相得益彰, 甚至一谈小说就
非谈帝国主义不可,反之亦然。”[1 ] (P71) 或许是麦尔维尔所处的时代使人们较少注意到《白
鲸》和帝国主义的关系,因为《白鲸》出版于1851 年, 而 人们通常把1898 年的美西战争作为美国走上帝国主义
道路的标志。其实早在建国之初,美国就继承了萨克逊 民族的帝国主义扩张精神,到了19 世纪中期,这种精神
变得更加狂热: 在西部敞开了大门,1849 年加利福尼亚 又出现淘金热潮,创办《纽约论坛报》的霍勒斯·格里利
