16mo (135 x 75 mm). Woodcut device on title, engraved additional pictorial title by Romeyn de Hooghe, one engraved folding plate, 23 engraved illustrations (most full-page) in the text. Early vellum, ink lettered on spine, three raised bands. Light soiling and spotting on covers, scattered browning, old ink and pencil markings on endpapers.

Second, but first illustrated, edition of a treatise on the unicorn. Bartholin, Professor of Medicine at the University of Copenhagen, examines the history and mythology of the unicorn, together with a study of other one-horned animals such as the narwhal and rhinoceros. The illustrations include a fine frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe, and a copy of Durer\’s celebrated picture of the first rhinoceros imported into Europe.
