他是怪诞的艺术奇才，10岁就开始学画，一生却遭遇诸多磨难…
勒内·弗朗索瓦·吉兰·马格里特（René François Ghislain Magritte，1898年11月21日－1967年8月15日）是比利时的超现实主义画家，画风带有明显的符号语言。
勒内·弗朗索瓦出生于埃诺省莱西纳，是裁缝父亲利奥波德·马格里特的长子，母亲则做女帽的销售。童年时常常搬家，10岁时就开始学画，1912年母亲投河（桑布尔河）自杀，原因不明。
他青年时在布鲁塞尔的比利时皇家美术学院就学两年，1918年毕业后曾在壁纸工厂负责花纹设计。

1919年，他开始对未来主义和奥费立体主义产生兴趣，并受到大他十岁的意大利画家基里诃的影响，开始了超现实主义的风格。
1922年他与童年玩伴若尔热特·贝尔热结婚。两人在1913年认识。
1926年，他开始全职绘画，并于同年画成《迷失的骑师》（Le jockey perdu），为第一幅超现实主义作品。并在1927年在布鲁塞尔举行首次的个人画展，但遭到大量侮辱性的批评。
这次失败使他感到郁闷，于是他移居巴黎。后来他又回到布鲁塞尔，与他的弟弟成立一间公司，赚取生活收入。

1927年到1930年间，他移居巴黎。
在这期间，他认识了安德烈·布勒东，并加入了超现实主义者的行列，大量的创造出具有神秘语意的迷人画作，同时也为许多时装海报或乐谱封面进行商业平面设计。
1936年他的作品曾到美利坚合众国纽约展出，后来又在1965年现代艺术博物馆、1992年大都会艺术博物馆举行回顾展。
在纳粹德国占领比利时王国期间，他坚持留在布鲁塞尔，因而与安德烈决裂。

在这段时期，他放弃在作品中展现野蛮主义和超现实主义，后来又恢复了。
他的画风变化不大，但也有稍许改变，例如1943年－1944年的“雷诺阿时期”和1947年－1948年的“野兽派风格时期”等。

马格里特一生的风格变化不大，他不受流行的新技巧影响，而专注于创作奇幻的、恐怖的、充满特殊构想的形象。

作品里浮现一种死寂的安静，表达的观点含括了从政治到哲学的理性世界，对于其他大师们常用的有关男女情爱的题材，马格里特极少涉及。
马格里特的绘画风格基本保持了被称之为磨尘精密、神秘的现实主义，或魔幻现实主义的超现实主义风格。
作品真实地表现日常场景，不作变形歪曲，但事件与细节的意外组合，产生奇特怪诞的神秘意味，如同睡眠中醒来一瞬间。
在不清醒状态下所产生的错幻视觉，具有超凡的想象力，形成了超现实主义绘画中独具一格的画风。
